Module # 5.1.1

Describe the difference between a print database and a computer database

Getting there

Lets start with a print database.  They are much like a stack of well formatted index cards.

On these index cards, the first line always contains the same TYPE of information.
For example the first line has somebody's name.
We will call the lines on the cards FIELDS.
We will also call the cards RECORDS.

We can search or QUERY through these cards for records that contain certain information (like BOB for a name).
We could also organize, or SORT these cards (for instance, alphabetically by name).

But that is about all.  Electronic DATABASES can SORT and QUERY for you.  Also they can be used to insert names and other information into form letters.  How about printing the records on sticky labels for mailings?
