Module # 6.1.1

Connect/log on

Getting there

This should be easy huh?

So your computer will need to be connected to a file server, either by wires or some kind of wireless system (like infra-red).  It will also need to have the correct CLIENT SOFTWARE for the file server Network Operating System (NOS).

Start up your computer. (see the pictures)

WINDOWS95: once the computer starts, you will be prompted for a user name and password. (you have to obtain these from your network administrator).  Click OK.  If you don't get prompted for a username and password, double-click on the NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD icon on the desktop.  Double click on the file server you would like to use.  You will then be prompted for the name and password. (you will also see a list of volumes, right click and choose MAP NETWORK DRIVE.  then click OK).

MAC: You may be prompted for a username and password (you have to obtain these from your network administrator).  If you are not, click on the APPLE in the upper right hand corner of the screen and select CHOOSER from the drop-down menu.   You will see 2 or 3 boxes in the new window.  In the upper right box, click on APPLESHARE.  You will then see a list of fileservers on the right.  Double click on the file server you wish to access.  You will be prompted for a user name and password.  Then the computer will ask which fileserver volume you wish to use (volumes are like separate disks).  Double click on the one you want to use.   You will then see the chooser screen again.  Close the window.2. Wait while the computer REBOOTS.

Exercise #1

Try to log into your network system (you will need to obtain a user id from the network administrator).
