Module # 7.1.2

Locate and use connection software (configuration & client)

Getting there

DIAL-UP

This one is tough.  each INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP) uses slightly different software.  Also if you are dialing into a local area network, the software will be different.

The computers will either use SERIAL LINE IP (SLIP) or POINT TO POINT PROTOCOL (PPP).  This software is usually identified with the name of the service provider.  If it is difficult to find  You can:

WINDOWS: check START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, DIAL-UP NETWORKING.
MAC: try CONTROL PANELS, PPP

Either way, the software needs to know certain information.
It needs to know the connection location of your modem.
The brand name and type of modem.
The speed of the connection (usually set to the fastest that the modem can go).
The phone number to dial (including if you need to dial a 9 to get an outside line).
Your USER NAME and PASSWORD for the service.

There is usually an option on the software for settings this information.
There is also an option on the software that says DIAL.

DIRECT CONNECTION

Usually when the computer starts up, it will ask for a user name and password.  This is often the gateway to the rest of the network.  Windows computers have the CLIENT PROGRAM for Microsoft networks and /or Novell networks installed when they are connected to a network.  MAC's have the CLIENT PROGRAM for AppleShare networks install at all times.
