Module # 7.3.3

Access a specific web site by entering the appropriate URL (concept of URL, http, web site)

Getting there

Look just above this page.  See the line that has a box containing something like "http://www.cobitz.com/xxxgddsdgd".   This is the URL for this page.  URL's ALWAYS start with HTTP:// if they are web pages (like this one).  They start with FTP:// if it is a location to get a file from.  (or telnet:// if you want to use somebody else's computer)

So each page can be called a web site.  Each page has its own address.  Look at the real address for this page.
http://www.cobitz.com/comp101/070303.htm
The first part you understand already.
The WWW is left over from when the people who designed it wanted to develop a WORLD-WIDE WEB of interconnected resources.  Not all addresses start with WWW.  Also this is the name of the computer that contains the web page.
The next section ( COBITZ.COM)  is the DOMAIN name for the location that has the computer.
Everything after the / is the directory path to the page (and the name of the file that contains the page).  This part of the address is case sensitive.

So what does this mean?  Type in an address in the location on the screen that has the current address, then press the ENTER key.  You will be magically whisked to the new page.

Exercise #1

Try entering the following address to see if you can do it right.
