Module #7.3.5

Knowledge and use of filters (software driven, server based, search engine inclusive)

Getting there

Filters are just like coffee filters, they keep the grounds out of the good stuff.  In our case, the grounds are the offensive content containing web pages.

There are many forms of filters.  They range from the HOTBOT search engine, listing warning lights on the list of sites to SERVER BASED solutions that block out pages that contain one of the forbidden words.  The most common version is the software security guard program.  Programs like "Netnanny"  or "Cyberpatrol"  usually have a list of inappropriate sites.  This list must be updated regularly.  The sites are blocked from the computer.

While these methods can be effective, the honest truth is that a student with the desire to see these locations will find a way!  The best solution to avoid legal hassles, is to have each student sign an acceptable use policy (AUP) agreement (with parent signatures also).  This way, when a student makes their way around the security software, it becomes the childs fault for doing so, instead of the school's fault for not preventing it.

Exercise #1

Check with soembody at your location to find out which solution your organization is using.
