Research Worksheet

Follow these steps to help get you started:

1. Click on either Netscape Navigator or Explorer (depending on your school's set up)

2. At the top of the screen will be a thin white space that starts with "http://www." This is where we will be typing the URL (address).

3. You need to highlight that area and type in www.cobitz.com/history/index.htm Be sure to do this carefully and get all of the letters correct or else it won't work.

4. Then press Enter.

5. You should get a screen that is divided into two frames.

6. On the left hand side you need to click on "Search the markers"

7. Now you are ready to begin searching your famous figure in North Carolina.

Let's start our search.

1. Who is the North Carolina figure you wish to research? ___________________

2. Type that person's name in the box next to Keywords. Be sure that you have spelled this person's name correctly or else you might not get any hits.

3. Press Enter after you have correctly entered the name of the figure.

4. You should then get a chart with some important information.

Now begins the real research.  Using the database find the answers to the following questions. If your answers don't fit on the line, that is okay, use a separate sheet of paper to keep it neat!

2. Where did this person live in North Carolina?_______________________
3. Where was this person born? ___________________________
4. Where did his/her family live? __________________________
5. Did he/she travel? ________ Where? ___________________
6. Who were other people that this person hung around?_________________
7. What other famous North Carolina figures were around this area during the same time in history? ______________________________________
8. Could your figure and these figures have met? For what reasons?  ________________________________________________________
9. What other events were taking place in North Carolina during the same period of time? __________________________________________________
10. Did these events affect your figure in any way? How or why? _________________________________________________________

After completing the research activity you should have some great ideas for a story. I know that you are just dying to get it on paper. So let's begin!

You should always begin by creating a story map. Be sure to use the information you have just found to create interesting characters in exciting places.
