Computer Fundamentals for Teachers
Competency # 1 Computer Operation Skills
Module # 1.2.4

Select, open, and move an icon

Getting there

So by now you probably know when the computer is on and off.  This module helps you do things with the computer.  Look at the picture below:

icons.jpg (23859 bytes)
     The 4 pictures are ICONS.

       A               B               C              D

A = the icon for an application
B = the icon for a disk (Windows 95 picture)
C = the icon for a folder
D = the icon for a document (the picture is different depending on the application that is used for the document).

WINDOWS:  To select the icon, right click once on it.
To open the icon, double click on it.
To move the icon, click and drag it.
To change the options, left click and choose properties from the menu.

MAC:  To select the icon, click once on it.
To open the icon, double click on it.
To move the icon, click and drag it.
To change the options, select it, then go to the "FILE" menu and choose "GET INFO".

It really doesn't matter what type of ICON it is, they all work about the same.  Opening the icon will cause the contents associated with it to be displayed.

Exercise #1

Choose an icon and select it, then try to find the properties, then try opening the icon.  Repeat this process several times to be sure you are comfortable with the process.
