Competency # 1 Computer Operation Skills
Module 1.6.1
Inserting and ejecting floppy disks
Getting there
Is this for real? YES!
If you don't already have one in front of you, get a floppy disk and
come back to this tutorial.
So there is a slot in the front of the computer that is about the size
of a floppy disk.
Disks have a metal cover that slides from side to side. This is the edge that goes
into the computer first (if you look carefully, you can see an arrow that points to this
edge. It means "the edge first!"). The side with the metal disk goes
down (on some computers this is to one side. Look for a small round hole or a button
to tell you which side the round metal piece goes toward)
Before you attempt this: You should look at the disk to check
that the metal cover is smooth and free of dents. Also check that the cover slides
easily from side to side.
WINDOWS: If the button close to the disk drive is sticking
out, there is a disk in the computer. See the next section to figure out how to
remove the disk
MAC: Look carefully at the disk drive to make sure there is
not already a disk in the computer!
Removing disks:
What? Yes it is harder to get a disk out than put it in
WINDOWS: If the light on the disk drive is on, don't try to
remove the disk (this would be bad!). When the light is off, find the button that is
sticking out next to the disk and press it in firmly. The disk should pop out.
MAC: Somewhere on your screen will be a picture of the
disk in the disk drive. Generally it looks like a real disk. Drag this icon to
the trash can to eject it.
Exercise #1
NOW, check your disk, check to make sure the disk drive is empty; and insert your
disk. Next, eject your disk. Repeat a couple times to make sure you have it.
