Module # 2.1.2

Connect peripheral devices

Getting there

1. Plug the speakers into the sound card. There is usually a cable for the speakers that looks like a headphone cable. This should plug into a jack on the back of the computer labeled something like "speakers"

2. Plug the printer into a surge suppresser (if you have a printer). Plug the other printer cable into the back of the computer. The is usually only one jack on the computer that the cable will plug into easily.

3. Plug the computer into the network or phone line. The network cable looks like a big phone plug. I should easily fit into the network card. A phone line has a slightly smaller plug that will fit loosely into a network card so MAKE SURE THE PHONE LINE PLUGS INTO A JACK THAT IS JUST THE RIGHT SIZE.

4. Other devices: Scanners use a special interface called SCSI. If your computer does not have a SCSI port on the back, you need to get a SCSI card that plugs in inside your computer. (that is more advanced). Other peripherals often have different cables and jacks that they use. Read the instructions to find out which ports they need and how they plug in.

Exercise #1

Look at the cords and plugs on the back of the computer you are using. See where they plug in and how you would tell which is the right place to plug them in.
