So here goes. The item below is a spreadsheet:

Are you impressed yet? So this is a print spreadsheet. It
contains information in a MATRIX form. Each ROW below the top one (that is the
HEADER ROW) contains information on one student. We know they are students by the
title in the header row.
Notice that each COLUMN contains similar information. This is a
properly formatted spreadsheet. If it were more complex, it might have averages and
sums.
Electronic spreadsheets are the same. They contain information, but they do the
calculations for you. They both are used for numeric information.
