Module # 7.1.1

Check physical connections before attempting log on
Check that all telecomputing hardware is turned on and check cable connections

Getting there

There are 2 types of connections to networks/Internet.  They will be dealt with a little differently at first.  The first type is called DIAL-UP, the other is DIRECT CONNECTION.

DIAL-UP

To use this type of connection, you must have a MODEM of some type.   This piece of equipment allows the computer to use a phone line to speak to another computer.

It is usually best to turn the MODEM on before turning on the computer (sometimes, the MODEM is located inside the computer and you don't need to worry).   Check that the modem has at least a couple of lights on before turning on the computer.

The MODEM has 3 wires connected to it.  The first is a power cord that connects to an AC outlet.  The second is a SERIAL cable connected to the back of the computer.  The third is a phone line connected to a phone jack.  All three must be connected for the modem to function properly.

DIRECT CONNECTION

This type of connection requires that a dedicated phone line is connected into a ROUTER.  This ROUTER is a piece of networking equipment that sends PACKETS of information up the phone line if they are destined to go to a computer outside the building/campus.  They are expense, complicated, and often located someplace far away from the computer.

The computer usually connects to the router via a network.  This connection is made with a wire (usually) connected to the back of the computer.  From the computer, the wire leads to either other computers of a wall outlet.  Often it will have what appear to be large phone connectors on it (sometimes other types of connectors are used).

There are usually other pieces of equipment connected to make the network function.  Among the most important is a HUB.  This piece of equipment physically connects wires together and electrically shuffles packets around.  If it is not turned on, the network connection will not function.

Exercise #1
