Module # 7.3.4

Find a search engine site and perform a specific web search (list of search engines and purposes)

Getting there

So now that you know how to enter an address (and you actually tried it), you can go to a search engine.  Oops, what's a search engine?

Search engines are electronic billboards.  Why would you want to go to one?  Well to attract attention, they allow people to enter in some words that they are interested in and will spit out a list of web pages containing those words.   So for instance, if you were interested in me, you could type in my last name to see if there are any web pages about me.  Then while reading an add for toothpaste, you would see a list of all the known web page that have my name on them.

By the way, you will also find stuff about horse racing.  Well that isn't me so you need to REFINE your search.  Each search engine does this differently.  You should read the HELP that is provided (along with an add for cars).

Some common search engines and their addresses and uses:

Yahoo    www.yahoo.com     a listing of categorized pages
Infoseek    www.infoseek.com     wonderful narrowing technique (my favorite)
Lycos    www.lycos.com     good solid information
Magellan    www.mckinley.com     a wealth of information
Excite    www.excite.com     lots of results in many forms

Each of these will present you with a box to type words into.   Then click on SUBMIT, or GET IT, or GO, or SEARCH or something like that.  You will then see an active list of pages that match your word.  Click on the title of the page, and  you will see the page.
