Understand the three basic types of cells (label, value, and formula)

Label = Names of categories
Value = a number that is typed in
Formula = a mathematical equation that calculates answers

So WHAT?  Look at the spreadsheet below.

So you've seen it before.  The cells with words are LABELS.  The cells with the student scores are VALUES.  If the spreadsheet calculated the averages these cells would contain FORMULAS.  Notice how each VALUE has both a ROW LABEL and a COLUMN LABEL.
