Getting there

In EXCEL, click in a cell then go to the INSERT menu and choose FUNCTION.   You will see a window like this:
442.jpg (33333 bytes)
This is a look up table of all the functions available.  Functions are built in formulas that perform certain calculations.  The most common are SUM and AVERAGE.   Notice that there is an explanation of what the function does, and the SYNTAX to use.

After clicking OK you should place a range of cells in the parenthesis.   Ranges of cells are list by the STARTING CELL:ENDING CELL   So to average cells A1 through cell A15.  you should type in A1:A15

Exercise #1

Try summing the student fees in the sample spreadsheet using the SUM function.
