Module # 7.5.1

Knowledge of local accounts and access

Getting there

In many systems, you must have an account on the computer system in your school to access internet.

These accounts are created by an administrator (not necessarily a school administrator.  A computer or network administrator).

Once created, the information on each user is stored on a FILESERVER.
The network administrator set some limits on what each user can do.
To LOGIN on the system you will have to use the ID that the network administrator assigned you.
You will have to use a password also.

Once you are LOGGED IN, you will have access to the computer resources made available by your network administrator.
Among these resources can be access to the internet.
Sometimes you will have to enter a user ID and password to access certain resources.

You can think about this whole system as a building with an entrance to a tunnel in the basement.  First you must unlock the door to the house before you can get to the tunnel (internet and other resources outside your building).  Even though you are inside the house, you may still need to unlock the door to the tunnel.  The way you unlock these doors is by using a USER ID and PASSWORD.

Exercise #1

Find out from somebody in your building how to get a local account, and what resources are available once you have an account.
